As a kid I mostly found that show funny. Of all the monsters only Ramses scared me.
What I love about the show is the fact that Courage isn't cowardly at all! He is scared of everything, but he always overcomes his fears and does anything and everything to save Muriel and anyone else in need (except Eustace, who gets eaten sometimes but is always fine in the next episode). As a kid I thought Courage doesn't get enough credit for all he does.
But most of all, I love the comedy. Like Courage's screams, and the way he morphs his body to describe the danger to Eustace and Muriel (but they never get him seriously). And the shear randomness is just brilliant in every episode.
